Mardi Gras Is Coming to Minetto

On February 12, 2017, in Events, by MUMC

Rick as Aunt MarthaThe Minetto United Methodist Church will again this year host a Mardi Gras full of fun and merriment to mark the time before the start of Lent. The event will be held in the Fellowship Hall of the church on Friday, Feb. 24 at 7 pm.

Serving as Master of Ceremonies will be Rick Sivers who brings his jokes and stories for everyone to enjoy. Following a dessert intermission, Sivers will take everyone on a hair-raising journey on the roads of England. He was last in England in December and in his rental car traveled around part of England, leaving him with the thought that he would “never drive in England again!” Sounds of Brass will provide musical interludes before the show and during intermission.

Reservations for the Mardi Gras can be made by calling the church office at 315-343-3465 or signing up at the church.

The building is fully accessible and is located at the corner of State Route 48 and County Route 8, one block south of the Stewarts Shop, midway between Oswego and Fulton, in the village of Minetto. Its physical address for GPS purposes is 2433 County Route 8, Oswego, NY 13126. The mailing address is PO Box 217, Minetto, NY 13115.

A collection shed is available in the parking lot at the back of the church for usable clothing items that can be recycled. Acceptable items include: all clothing, shoes, sneakers, purses, blankets, sheets, pillowcases, drapes, and stuffed toys.

The church is offering for sale its Minetto Village Christmas Ornament Series to raise funds for several building maintenance projects. The available ornaments are: 2013 Minetto United Methodist Church, 2014 Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church, 2015 the Minetto Bridge over the Oswego River, and 2016 Minetto Town Hall. The Minetto United Methodist Church kitchen will spring to life in a few days as over 100 parishioners and friends prepare and serve the annual harvest turkey dinner. The dinner is scheduled for Saturday, October 15, with serving beginning at 4:00. Guests may eat in the dining room, carry out dinners to take home, or pick up dinners in the drive-through line. Last year, 798 dinners were served.

Everyone gets a complete traditional home-cooked dinner including roast turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, butternut squash, cole slaw, cranberry sauce, dinner roll, and homemade pie. The church is located at the corner of state route 48 and county route 8 in the village of Minetto, and the building is fully accessible.

This year’s dinner will use 32 turkeys weighing over 700 pounds, 288 pounds of potatoes, 260 pounds of squash, and over 100 homemade pies. Planning and conducting the dinner will involve at least 100 individuals of the congregation and community. “We look forward to seeing long-time friends and new customers as well. Our dinner has become an autumn tradition that is well loved by the people of our community and church,” said Pastor Chuck Forbes.

The Harvest Dinner was originally served in our dining room, but gradually more people wanted dinners to take home. In 2002, the option of drive-thru service was offered so people wouldn’t have to park and come inside the building. That first year, 182 of our total of 474 meals went out the drive-thru. Last year, 401 of our 798 meals were delivered to 160 vehicles in the drive-thru line, 24% were served in our dining room, 26% were carried away by people who came inside the building, and the remaining 50% were served via the drive-thru.

The church holds its harvest turkey dinner each fall to supplement support of its ministries in Minetto and around the world. The people of the church also support a number of outreach efforts within our community beyond what is provided by our official budget. Included are monthly gifts of non-perishable foods to local food pantries, collection of school supplies for the Minetto Elementary School, monthly free dinners, contributions of food-stamp ineligible necessities to the Helping Hands Cupboard at Fulton State Street UMC, clothing and gifts provided to children and families of need at Christmas time, a monthly noisy can offering given to a wide variety of local charitable purposes, and providing meeting space for several music, exercise, writing, and Scouting groups. Under Pastor Forbes’ leadership, the people of the church are striving to be God’s love to our neighbors in all places.

The church has a shed at the back of the building for collecting used clothing for distribution in this country and abroad to people in need. Acceptable items include all clothing, shoes, sneakers, belts, purses, blankets, sheets, pillowcases, drapes, and stuffed toys. Guests attending the dinner are encouraged to bring recyclables with them.

Worship services are at 10:00 each Sunday morning and visitors are always welcome.
