New Pastor at Minetto United Methodist Church

The congregation of Minetto United Methodist Church will welcome a new pastor to its worship service on Sunday, July 7, the Rev. Guerschom Saint Ange. He is continuing to live out his childhood dream of being a pastor. He has a special love to minister to the elderly and shut-ins and is led by his motto, “Preach the Gospel and, if necessary, use words.”

Rev. Saint Ange, a life-long Methodist, was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and joined his family in the United States at age eighteen. He worked as a limo driver for about fifteen years, dismissing his dream of becoming a pastor until some people of the Premiere Eglise UMC in Brooklyn, where he was a member, discerned his gift for ministry and shared that observation with him. They inspired him to enter college where he earned the Bachelor of Arts Degree from the College of New Rochelle and the Master of Divinity Degree from New York Theological Seminary.

Saint Ange enrolled in the Continuing Professional Education program of Episcopal Health Services in the New York City area. Over the next four years, he served as a chaplain at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, Bishop Hucles Nursing Home, Bishop McLain Nursing Home, and Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. He became a probationary member of the New York Annual Conference of the UMC in 2006.

Since 2006, Rev. Saint Ange has pastored churches in the New York Conference, including Sloatsburg UMC, UMC of the Tarrytowns, St. Matthew’s and Ossining UMCs, and Asbury UMC at Mount Vernon.

Rev. Saint Ange and his wife, Paula, have two children in college; a daughter, Claire, and son, Patrick.

Visitors are always welcome. The building is fully accessible, and the sanctuary is equipped with individual listening devices. Five youths of the Minetto United Methodist Church recently completed their confirmation studies and were received into membership in the church by the Rev. Linda Harris, pastor. The new members are Bailey Noel DePoint, daughter of Lynnette and Brad DePoint; Allyson Jean Bruns and Lucas Robert Bruns, children of Jill and Robert Bruns; and Abigail Marie Toland and Joseph (Joey) Topher Toland, grandchildren of Sylvia and Shawn Allen.

The young people were assisted in their confirmation studies by church members Wynnette Dohse, Nancy Prarie, and June and Vernon Tryon under the leadership of the pastor. Their studies included scripture as well as church history, beliefs, and practice. They constructed a banner depicting their faith journey and presented it to the church to be hung in the sanctuary. They assisted with serving communion following their confirmation and were honored at a confirmation reception after the service.

Imagine! A Vision of Hope Concert by Concinnity

Members of Concinnity, the local select women’s vocal ensemble, and their friends, according to conductor Mary Lou Bjorkman, “would like to spread joy, awareness of issues, and optimism through their music.” They have chosen to make their voices heard by means of a concert entitled, Imagine! A Vision of Hope, that will be held at the First United Methodist Church, on Sunday, June 9 at 3:00 pm. The building is fully accessible and is located at 7111 State Route 104, Oswego, NY 13126, and there is ample parking.

Kindred Spirits, a group of community women from the region, will join with Concinnity, along with a youth string ensemble. They have volunteered their time to perform in this positive and thoughtful celebration of love, hope, and responsibility. Songs to be presented will include “Yes We Can,” “1000 Grandmothers,” “Seize the Day,” and, of course, John Lennon’s immortal, “Imagine.” There will be a slide show accompanying the concert.

Concinnity conductor Bjorkman invites the community to “join them for a Sunday afternoon filled with uplifting and inspirational music to soothe the soul and the ears.” There will be no admission charge, but a free will offering will be accepted.
